A Q&A with JB Collections

JB Collections is celebrating 33 years at Northbridge Plaza. Below is a Q&A with founder Julie Brown (hence the JB!) where she discusses the history of the business, tips, the fashion industry and more.

How did JB Collections start?
My mother Erica had been in fashion since arriving in Australia from Hungary in 1958. Initially, she was in manufacturing and then she opened a retail shop in the western suburbs. This led to our opening JB Collections at Northbridge in 1990.

What made you get into fashion retail?
I pretty much grew up in the fashion industry. When Erica sold her retail business she realised that she missed it terribly. So with her experience and my love of fashion we opened JB Collections in Northbridge Plaza.

Who is your favourite designer and why?
This is a hard question as I love all of the designers that I keep. The main thing for me is to offer a point of difference and something that is unique and high quality, whether an Australian designer or a European import. I especially love Alembika (from Israel) and Rundholz (from Germany) with their unique styling and eye for detail.

“My fondest memories are in the successful business I built with my mother, Erica, at the Plaza.”

How do you balance working and family life?
At times this can be very challenging but I really do work on it. I try to spend as much time with my family as I can.

What have been your fondest memories of your 33 years at Northbridge Plaza?
My fondest memories are in the successful business I built with my mother, Erica, at the Plaza. We were a great team and she really did leave the most amazing legacy. Even today, many of my customers remember her fondly.

Do you have customers from the beginning who still visit your team?
Yes I have several customers who still visit JB Collections. Even the lady who was our very first customer still shops from me.

What piece of advice would you now give to yourself starting out 33 years ago?
Know your market, provide caring personal service, and whatever you do, be consistent.

Who is in your team?
I’m so fortunate to have the wonderful Darelle who works with us during the week and Marilyn, who is new to us, on Sundays. I’m also thankful to have my family’s expertise to look after our website, newsletter and social media communications.

“Jackets and blazers have made a big come back, which I am thrilled about.”

What are you most excited for in 2023?
I’m excited about the fantastic new stock for the coming winter and summer seasons. This will include the introduction of several unique, high quality labels, including an exciting, high end Australian-manufactured brand which I know our customers will love.

What are your style predictions for 2023?
For the last few years with Covid, it was all about leisure wear. Now with more events happening and people venturing out socially, there is definitely going to be a lot more dressing up. Jackets and blazers have made a big come back, which I am thrilled about.

What piece are you most excited about in your store currently?
I really love the Angela Caputi jewellery which is crafted in a workshop near the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, Italy. Her jewellery has a great following world-wide and has featured in New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and many other prestigious galleries.

What is your favourite time of the year?
I love the change of seasons. Very soon now we will be receiving the autumn and winter ranges for winter 2023 and that is always an exciting time for our team and our wonderful customers.

First up, as we mentioned in this update, we now keep the very gorgeous Johnny Was at JB Collections! It’s such a beautiful label and we are happy to be able to bring it to you.

Winter wonderland of clothes

This winter is proving to be incredibly stylish. We’ve received new deliveries from a number of our suppliers over the past few weeks, so we thought we would provide an overview of what has already arrived. There’s more to come too, including Desigual, knitwear and more from Verge, so stay tuned.

Let’s begin!

First up we have the latest from Rundholz and Verge. Jackets are in this year and Rundholz’s offering is fabulous. Plus Verge’s ever popular jeans are back!

Next up are some beautiful pieces from Layer’d. These pieces are nice and light and we love the prints too. Plus, we have knitwear from a new label for JB Collections called LD & Co. and they’re just so easy to wear.

Sabatini’s new range of jackets and jumpers, along with the label’s iconic leather pants, is great casual wear and very comfortable too.

Brighten things up for winter with Alembika’s unique tops and pants. Plus, if the rainy weather we’ve had so far this year in Sydney is anything to go by, the Annette Görtz collection will prove to be very useful!

Keep warm with a pullover from B.yu, or if you need something a bit dressier, look no further than Crea.

Plus don’t miss the stunning handmade earrings from Mescha. A perfect complement to any ensemble. They are available in store and online.

Stay warm this winter

It’s getting cooler by the day and while we might not be going out as much, there’s still plenty to love when it comes to winter fashion! So what’s available right now? Here are a few ideas for some comfortable clothes to keep you warm.

Pullovers: When it’s cold out, it’s hard to find a better piece of clothing than a soft, warm pullover. It’s easy to throw on and goes great with just about anything. This season’s pullovers are incredibly comfortable and come in a variety of colours and fabrics including cashmere and wool blends. Here are just a couple of examples:

Jackets: Jackets are always very popular and this year we have an eclectic range to suit every style. Labels such as Nü and Verge have put a modern twist on classic styles of jackets. See more below.

Scarves: Apart from keeping your neck warm, scarves are great to add extra flair to any outfit. We have a number of scarves available with gorgeous patterns.

What’s new this winter?

Winter is just around the corner, so what’s in this year? Well, it’s going to be beautiful, at least where clothes are concerned. A number of our winter order have already been delivered, so whether you like solid colours, bright colours or prints, you’ll be happy to know it’s all here!

Unique designs is what Rundholz Black Label does best. As you can see here the label is continuing that trend.

For those who like solid colours, you can’t go past the Verge collection. Verge jeans are always very popular as are the label’s comfortable tops.

For a splash of colour, we have a variety of labels that have produced bright clothes for the winter season. Plus, if you’re looking for accessories, you can’t go past these.

As we’ve explained before, we are big fans of prints on our clothes. This collection is just gorgeous!

There are more clothes to be unpacked, so watch this space! We’ll keep you updated right here.

Three questions customers ask about clothes

With nearly 30 years in the fashion industry, we’ve been asked a lot of questions over the years about looking after clothes. We offer a unique collection of women’s fashion from all over the world. While some of these clothes are made from very durable fabrics, others need a little more TLC. Some of the garments might require dry cleaning or hand washing while others can go straight in the washing machine with everything else.

So here are three of the most common questions customers ask us:

  1. Does it shrink? Some clothes are more susceptible to this than others. I try to use a cold water gentle cycle to help prevent shrinking. I also avoid using the dryer where possible.
  2. Is it washable? This one is obviously important. Follow the instructions on the label. We may also be able to give you some guidance about how to care for the garment to extend its wearable life so you can get more enjoyment out of it!
  3. Does it crease? Some clothes crease more than others. It really depends on the fabric – some clothes crease by design while some clothes will need more care when ironing. Other clothes won’t require ironing at all. Linen, which has been very popular this year, always creases. A customer told me many years ago that what she does with linen is to wash it gently, shake it out, hang it up and wear it. Don’t fuss with ironing. Linen gets softer and better the more you wash it.
